Event narrative

A trained spotter with the Philmont Scout Ranch shared reports and video of quarter to hen egg size hail pelting the grounds. Hail damaged trees, 60 vehicles, and tore through camping equipment such as unoccupied tents. Thankfully there were no reports of fatalities or injuries. Damage is an estimate.

Wider weather episode

An upper level trough crossing northern NM overlaid abundant moisture near the surface resulting in severe weather supercells developing along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. These supercells produced severe hail ranging in size from quarters to hen egg size. Video of golf ball to hen egg size hail was shared from Philmont Scout Ranch in Colfax County, resulting in damage to vehicles, trees, and other structures. Thankfully there was no reports of injuries or fatalities.
