Event narrative
A NMDOT mesonet weather station along I-40 measured a severe wind gust of 63 mph induced by a dry thunderstorm.
Wider weather episode
An upper level trough crossing northern NM overlaid abundant moisture near the surface resulting in severe weather supercells developing along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. These supercells produced severe hail ranging in size from quarters to hen egg size. Video of golf ball to hen egg size hail was shared from Philmont Scout Ranch in Colfax County, resulting in damage to vehicles, trees, and other structures. Thankfully there was no reports of injuries or fatalities.
