Event narrative
Seven swimmers were caught in a rip current at the Webster Avenue beach. Rescuers attempted to rescue all of the affected people. Six were rescued. Of those six, three had to be transported to a hospital to recover. The seventh individual was found partially submerged in the water. CPR was administered on the beach, and he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Wider weather episode
Multiple days of onshore flow had resulted in elevated rip current risk across the region. There had been a moderate or high risk from July 31 through August 12. Several area beach patrols reported a much higher than average number of rescues.
