Event narrative

With only slightly above average rainfall for the month, D2 (severe) drought conditions persisted across portions of Butler County. The cooperative observers at Brainard 1.1 S and Bellwood 5.8 W recorded 5.92 and 7.13 inches of precipitation for the month, respectively. These values were 1.05 and 1.94 inches above average.

Wider weather episode

Severe (D2) to extreme (D3) drought conditions persisted across portions of eastern Nebraska through the month of June. However, significant rainfall, with amounts ranging from 2 to locally 8 inches above average, fell in parts of northeast Nebraska that were previously experiencing extreme drought. This precipitation led to a substantial improvement, with the entire extreme drought area upgrading to moderate (D1) drought by July 1st. Despite this improvement, small pockets of severe drought (D2) still lingered in Knox, Butler, and Seward counties.
