Event narrative

Local social media reports from northeast of Fairbanks showed images of significant hail accumulation on the ground. One image did however picture one inch diameter hail near the intersection of Sheep Creek Road and Trilby Avenue.

Wider weather episode

After several days of summer heat across Alaska's interior, the upper ridge responsible for the heat shifted north allowing for a moist east and northeasterly flow to become established. With a combination of daytime heating resulting in increased instability along with upslope flow across the White mountains, numerous thunderstorms moved over the central interior. While these storm were accompanied by prolific amounts of lightning, a few managed to become severe as well and produced large hail and gusty winds.
