2025-09-07 · near Ojo Feliz, Mora, New Mexico
Event narrative
A trained spotter in Ojo Feliz observed nickel size hail from a strong thunderstorm.
Wider weather episode
A weak disturbance rotating southeast around a ridge of high pressure over the Desert Southwest combined with higher moisture along and east of the central mountain chain resulting in the development of isolated strong to severe storms along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. One of these storms produced nickel size hail at Ojo Feliz in Mora County. Isolated thunderstorms across eastern New Mexico quickly dissipated during the evening hours around sunset due to the loss of daytime heating.
