Strong thunderstorms traveled from central to northeast South Dakota during the afternoon and evening of July 28th. Hail was measured at 3.5 inches diameter 5 miles north of Cresbard to baseball sized near Chelsea, with damage to vehicles, siding and nearby crops. As the storms continued east, they generated strong winds, with a peak gust of 77 mph recorded by the South Dakota Department of Transportation mesonet station 1 mile north northwest of Summit.
