A COOP observer in Wilmot relayed that several large tree branches were downed around town by the thunderstorm winds.

The wider storm

Strong thunderstorms traveled from central to northeast South Dakota during the afternoon and evening of July 28th. Hail was measured at 3.5 inches diameter 5 miles north of Cresbard to baseball sized near Chelsea, with damage to vehicles, siding and nearby crops. As the storms continued east, they generated strong winds, with a peak gust of 77 mph recorded by the South Dakota Department of Transportation mesonet station 1 mile north northwest of Summit.
