Five people were rescued in the span of 5 minutes at New Buffalo Beach. They
were rescued around the time that water conditions deteriorated and flags were
changed from yellow to red, which would have been around 4 PM EDT. Lifeguards were able to rescue all 5 people from waves and currents.
Wider weather episode
Multiple people were rescued from rip currents Sunday afternoon. A majority of the rescues happened when the flag changed from yellow to red. Within minutes there were multiple rescues as people were finding themselves in trouble due to the unexpected change in lake conditions. It was estimated there were 5 rescues all within 5 minutes.
Flags were changed from yellow to red at 4:07 PM EDT on Sunday, July 20th.
