Mesonet site XBAY at Bayville measured a 39 knot wind gust.

A weak cold front worked through southern New England towards the area. Ahead of the boundary a moist and moderately unstable airmass was set up. Given cold temperatures aloft and steep low level lapse rates, one storm was able to become severe and produce a damaging wind gust over the waters.
