Event narrative

A high school athlete collapsed at football practice. He was hospitalized and treated for heat stroke until he succumbed to complications from organ failure.

Wider weather episode

An upper-level ridge began to build over the Mid-South, causing slightly above normal temperatures for early July. Heat indices peaked between 95 and 100 degrees F. Hot and humid nights made heat stress an increasing threat. A high school athlete collapsed at football practice on July 6th and was hospitalized and began treatment for heat stroke. Unfortunately, he succumbed to complications from organ failure caused by severe heat stroke and passed away on July 26.
