Event narrative
Small pockets of severe (D2) drought conditions over southwestern, southeastern and northern portions of Holt county, improved to moderate (D1) and abnormally dry (D0) drought conditions by the end of July. The cooperative observer at Atkinson 3SW reported 3.86 inches of precipitation for July. This was 1.29 inches above the normal of 2.57 inches. The cooperative observer at O'Neill reported 5.51 inches of precipitation for July. This was 2.25 inches above the normal of 3.26 inches.
Wider weather episode
Normal to above normal rainfall, coupled with average temperatures, led to improvements in drought conditions across most of western and north central Nebraska in July. Drought conditions remained unchanged across the eastern Nebraska Panhandle, as well as portions of Hayes and Frontier Counties.
