Event narrative

Alpena County Regional Airport, KAPN, reported a gust to 54mph with the thunderstorms. Additional reports downstream through the city of Alpena of downed trees and power outages through 11:05 prior to moving over Thunder Bay.

Wider weather episode

A tightly wound low pressure system, complete with strong winds aloft, resulted in development of a second line of storms during the late morning/midday ahead of a strong cold front (70s ahead of the front across NE Lower MI falling into the 20s and 30s with snow across the Keweenaw Peninsula). Storms primarily produced gusty winds up to around 50mph, followed by a period of synoptic winds in the afternoon in excess of 40mph.
