Flash Flood — Kane, Utah

2025-07-17 · near Paria, Kane, Utah

Event narrative

The USGS Paria River Gauge near Kanab reported a double peak in streamflow to around 1200 CFS on the evening of July 17th. The initial rise in flow was likely associated with storms earlier in the day in the upper Paria River Basin.

Wider weather episode

A weak northern stream shortwave trough moving through the northwest CONUS resulted in the development of high based convection. Some of this convection resulted in strong to severe wind gusts. Additionally, a cutoff low placed off of the southwest CONUS helped advect moisture into southern Utah, leading to convection with periods of sufficiently heavy rain to result in flash flooding over some rain sensitive areas.
