Event narrative

The Sand Creek Fire was started by lightning and spread rapidly on August 15th. The fire was 8 miles west of Ashton in the Sand Creek area, near Lower Arcadia Reservoir. Strong winds spread the fire rapidly. Evacuations were ordered for those living in the area by the 16th. This affected residents in the Cedar Ridge Subdivision including the surrounding 5 mile radius near Sadorus Hill. Structures were threatened and one outbuilding was destroyed. The fire covered 851 acres and burned grass, brush, juniper, aspen and conifer. It was 100 percent contained by the 18th.
