Wider weather episode
Increasingly unstable atmospheric conditions on the afternoon of September 5th ahead of a cold front led to strong thunderstorms across portions of West Virginia. Storms initially developed west of the Ohio River and grew to strong to severe thresholds as they crossed into the state. As a result, damaging wind gusts that accompanied these storms caused a swath of downed trees across the Kanawha Valley and up into the central lowlands before weakening as they approached the Appalachian Mountains.
