A longwave trough slowly crossing the region was able to pull sufficient Gulf moisture into Missouri. This moisture combined with 90 degree air temperatures was enough for heat index values to exceed 105 degrees. Afternoon shower and thunderstorm coverage was minimal and only provided temporary relief from the heat.
