Event narrative

The month started with the entire zone in Exceptional(D4) drought but by the end of August, the eastern half of the zone was in Extreme(D3) drought. The Cooperative Observer in Cliff received 2.01 inches of precipitation which was 0.44 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

After some areas received above normal rainfall in July, some improvement was noted in southwest New Mexico during the month of August, especially east of the Rio Grande.
