Event narrative

The zone started August with Exceptional(D4) drought across the entire area. By the end of the month, the NW half of the zone remained in Exceptional(D4) drought while the southeast half improved to Extreme(D3) drought. The Antelope Wells Cooperative Observer received 1.39 inches of rainfall which was 0.90 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

After some areas received above normal rainfall in July, some improvement was noted in southwest New Mexico during the month of August, especially east of the Rio Grande.
