Event narrative
August started with the entire zone in Extreme(D3) drought and by the end of the month, the southern half of the zone improved to Severe(D2) drought. The Hillsboro Cooperative Observer reported 0.96 inches of precipitation which was 1.45 inches below normal.
Wider weather episode
After some areas received above normal rainfall in July, some improvement was noted in southwest New Mexico during the month of August, especially east of the Rio Grande.
