Event narrative

The zone started out entirely in Extreme(D3) drought. By the end of the month, the eastern half of the zone improved to Severe(D2) drought. The Truth or Consequences Airport received 1.21 inches of precipitation which was 0.55 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

After some areas received above normal rainfall in July, some improvement was noted in southwest New Mexico during the month of August, especially east of the Rio Grande.
