The entire zone started the month in Extreme(D3) drought but the eastern half improved to Severe(D2) drought by the end of the month.

Wider weather episode

After some areas received above normal rainfall in July, some improvement was noted in southwest New Mexico during the month of August, especially east of the Rio Grande.
