What the National Weather Service wrote

A picture on social media shows various sized hail stones covering the ground in the community of Hippo. There are numerous large stones that can be observed which are at least quarter-sized.

The wider storm

A line of storms developed across Kentucky ahead of a cold front that began pushing into the state from the west during the afternoon hours on the 14th. As it continued to traverse the state and move into eastern Kentucky, the line of storms resulted in numerous instances of severe weather, including hail and damaging winds. The system them exited overnight, with storms and instances of severe weather ending just after midnight on the 15th in Harlan County.
