What the National Weather Service wrote

A lack of substantial rainfall led to the worsening of Moderate (D1) to Severe (D2) drought across Coastal Broward County to Severe (D2) to Extreme (D3) drough during the month of August.

The wider storm

Prolonged periods of dry weather across much of Southeast Florida since the winter months led to drought conditions entering August. Summer rainfall focused over western portions of the peninsula allowed for some improvement of the drought over the southern Everglades but areas of the east coast metropolitan areas suffered worsening of the drought due to limited rainfall.
