Hurricane Erin passed well offshore and combined with high pressure to the north, resulting in a period of strong onshore winds and coastal flooding across eastern Virginia and the Virginia Eastern Shore. The tide gauge at Tappahannock, VA reported moderate tidal flooding twice, recording 3.54 feet MLLW at 12:50 PM EST on August 22, and 3.87 feet MLLW at 12:55 AM on August 23.
