Hurricane Erin passed well offshore and combined with high pressure to the north, resulting in a period of strong onshore winds and coastal flooding across eastern Virginia and the Virginia Eastern Shore. The tide gauge at Tangier Island, VA rose above moderate flood thresholds 3 times: recording 3.86 feet MLLW at 7:56 PM EST on August 21, 3.85 feet at 11:05 AM EST and 4.10 feet at 7:56 PM EST on August 22. The tide gauge at Chincoteague, VA rose to 5.02 feet MLLW at 7:00 PM EST on August 21.
