Hurricane Erin passed well offshore and combined with high pressure to the north, resulting in a period of strong onshore winds and coastal flooding across eastern Virginia and the Virginia Eastern Shore. The tide gauge at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel rose above moderate flood thresholds to a value of 5.96 feet MLLW at 7:00 PM EST on August 21. The tide gauge at Kiptopeke VA, rose above moderate thresholds twice: recording 5.47 feet MLLW at 8:26 PM EST August 21 and 5.09 feet MLLW at 8:36 PM EST on August 22.
