Hurricane Erin passed well offshore and combined with high pressure to the north, resulting in a period of strong onshore winds and coastal flooding across eastern Virginia and the Virginia Eastern Shore. The tide gauge at Sewell's Point rose above moderate flood thresholds to a value of 5.53 feet MLLW at 7:42 PM EST on August 21. The tide gauge at Lynnhaven, VA recorded both major and moderate coastal flooding. Major flooding reaching 5.77 feet MLLW occurred at 7:06 PM EST on August 21. Moderate flooding of 5.05 feet MLLW was recorded at 8:21 PM EST on August 22.
