Hurricane Erin passed well offshore and combined with high pressure to the north, resulting in a period of strong onshore winds and coastal flooding across eastern Virginia and the Virginia Eastern Shore. The tide gauge at Sewell's Point rose above moderate flood thresholds to a value of 5.53 feet MLLW at 7:42 PM EST on August 21. Additionally, an emergency manager reported street flooding at the intersection of Bainbridge Boulevard and Portlock Road in the South Norfolk area of Chesapeake.
