Event narrative
Large breaking waves during the day caused the collapse of the remaining structure of the iconic Crash Boat pier in Aguadilla due to swells from Hurricane Erin. Video and eyewitness reports in social media confirmed surf impacts leading to structural failure.
Wider weather episode
Major Hurricane Erin moved northeast and north of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Erin's Outer Bands and then Feeder Bands still affected the islands, producing strong thunderstorms, gusty winds, and heavy rains across the islands. Several reports of wind gust damage, along with reports of high surf, flooding and debris flow were received between August 16 to 18.
