Broadcast media relayed a picture of a waterspout crossing the Pontchartrain Causeway just north of Metairie.

A typical summertime pattern was in place across the region. The very warm waters in nearshore and tidal lakes provide a unique mesoscale environment which promotes nocturnal thunderstorm development. A waterspout developed along the outflow boundary of that storm and dissipated as it reached the coast.
