Event narrative

Emergency manager and stream gauges reported flash flooding developed in south Charlotte, mainly along Little Sugar Creek and Little Hope Creek after 3 to 4 inches of rain fell in just a couple of hours. Little Hope Creek overflowed its banks and inundated part of Mockingbird Lane. Little Sugar Creek flooded a portion of Wakefield Dr, covered a part of Reece Rd with a couple of feet of water, and approached some homes south of Archdale Dr. Emergency manager reported multiple swift water rescues of motorists in south Charlotte. Media reported multiple cars stranded in floodwater in the Pineville area.

Wider weather episode

An area of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms developed over the North Carolina Piedmont in association with a surface low and stalled frontal boundary draped over the Coastal Plain. Localized very heavy rainfall resulted in urban and small stream flash flooding in south Charlotte.
