Event narrative

A damaged and partially clogged culvert caused running under Federal Street caused runoff from heavy rain to flow across Federal Street and Old Virginia Avenue. This has happened multiple times in the past, and local officials state that the flooding near the intersection would not have occurred like this if the culvert was functioning properly. No damage was reported to surrounding buildings.

Wider weather episode

Slow moving thunderstorms with rainfall rates as high as 5 inches per hour caused localized flooding in the City of Radford and neighboring Montgomery County. Heavy rain also caused flooding and a landslide in and around the Town of Rich Creek, VA.
