Event narrative

Wind gusts between 48 knots and 54 knots were recorded from the evening of October eleventh through the early morning hours of October Twelfth coming from the east to east-northeast. Reports came in via the Onslow Bay Outer Buoy.

Wider weather episode

A rapidly deepening low pressure system off the Carolina Coast interacted with strong high pressure ridging centered in the Northeast which extended down into the Mid-Atlantic. As these two systems interacted, a tight pressure gradient resulted allowing for storm force wind gusts across the Eastern North Carolina Coastal Waters and the Pamlico Sound during the overnight hours of October eleventh through the morning hours of October Twelfth.
