Event narrative

A slow moving supercell thunderstorm continued to move south through central Ochiltree County. It continued to produce large hail around the Wolf Creek Park area. Hailstones ranged from one inch to 2.5 inches.

Wider weather episode

Multiple supercell thunderstorms formed across the eastern Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles during the evening hours of September 8th. The overall environment was highly conducive for severe storm development, with hail as large as 3 to 3.5 inches in diameter being measured across portions of the eastern Panhandles. Due to the low level winds increasing after sunset, this allowed storms to have low level rotation which led to an increased threat for tornadoes throughout the rest of the evening. The severe thunderstorms tracked south across the eastern Texas Panhandle and Beaver county in the Oklahoma Panhandle and produced large to destructive hail and at least one known tornado. These storms were slow moving and also produced heavy rainfall that likely led to flash flooding, especially southeast of Perryton where multiple storms formed and tracked over the same location. Thunderstorm intensity diminished after midnight across the eastern Panhandles.
