Event narrative

A long-duration snowfall totaled 9.5 inches in Canton and 5.5 to 6.5 inches on the south side of Sioux Falls. Interstate 29 was briefly closed during the morning of November 29 due to numerous accidents along the stretch of roadway.

Wider weather episode

A strong moisture-laden Colorado Low moved across the Northern Plains November 28 and 29 resulting in widespread snowfall from 4 to 12 inches, with the greatest snowfall in portions of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota toward the U.S. Highway 71 corridor. Many locations found a brief break in snowfall later on November 28 when some light freezing rain and freezing drizzle occurred. Overall, area roadways were snow covered and slick resulting in hazardous travel.
