Event narrative

The Cape Edgecumbe buoy (46084) measured gusts in excess of 60mph for approximately an hour on the morning of the 26th, including a peak gust of 64mph at 1150am AKDT. In the same hour, a spotter in Sitka reported water spouts just off the coast out to Old Sitka Rocks. The water spouts were not confirmed.

Wider weather episode

An unusually strong fall storm developed and moved northeast into the Gulf of Alaska during the early morning hours of Friday 9/26, with pressure falling to 962mph and with hurricane force winds observed on the south side of the low center. As the system progressed northeastward, winds along the coast from Prince of Wales northward towards Baranof Island increased to Storm Force through Thursday morning, then to Hurricane Force through early afternoon. Storm force winds were observed in Southern Chatham and Sumner Strait. The system made landfall over the central panhandle Friday afternoon around 4pm, just north of Sitka, near Kruzof Island.
