Wider weather episode

Numerous afternoon showers and thunderstorms, tracking eastward across central Indiana, had updrafts intensify from an approaching upper shortwave trough. Effective vertical wind shear around 35-40 knots combined with freezing levels down to only 10,000 feet to promote growth of small hail. Small hailstones falling below the freezing level congealed into isolated large hail from Sullivan County to Jackson County. Sub-severe hail (0.75 inches) was also reported in Lawrence and Monroe Counties.
