Event narrative
Snow resulted in hazardous travel along Interstate 29, with the South Dakota Highway Patrol warning motorists that slick conditions had resulted in numerous slide-ins. A storm total of 5.7 inches of snow was measured by the Watertown COOP observer.
Wider weather episode
A broad area of light and fluffy snow developed across north central and northeast South Dakota. Observers at the National Weather Service at the Aberdeen Regional Airport recorded a total of 8.6 inches of snow, with 8 inches measured by both the COOP in Pollock and by a resident 5 miles south of Clark. Several slide-ins were noted in the Watertown area, and a semi was tipped and rolled on Interstate 29 near Castlewood. Watertown Fire Rescue performed a vehicle extraction after a half-ton pickup rolled onto its side, leaning over a bridge with the bridge beam trapping the driver near the Estelline exit.
