Event narrative

Strong northeast winds developed due to a coastal low lingering offshore on October 12. Winds frequently gusted to 40-50 mph between 12 AM and 8 PM EST on October 12. Eastern Currituck had a peak wind gust of 51 mph at the Carova Beach Fire Department mesonet. A peak gust to 55 mph occurred just to the south at the Duck NOS site.

Wider weather episode

A coastal low formed off of the Southeast coast on October 11 and slowly tracked north into October 13 before moving offshore. Meanwhile, a strong area of high pressure lingered over the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. This resulted in a prolonged period of strong northeast winds across northeast North Carolina on October 12.
