Sustained winds briefly reached 40 to 42 mph with a peak wind gust of 58 mph at the South Dakota Road Weather Information System site near the Platte-Winner Bridge.

A surface low pressure system moved across South Dakota into northwest Minnesota on October 20, allowing a strong cold front to sweep across the region. Surface winds shifted to northwest behind the front, gusting at times between 40 and 55 mph. A couple locations across south-central South Dakota briefly reported sustained winds in excess of 40 mph with gusts to 58 mph.
