Event narrative

Wind gusts of 62-79 mph were recorded at the St. Francis Airport (KSYF) AWOS. An additional wind gust of 76 mph was also recorded on the Weather Underground site named KKSSAINT20 which is 1 SSE St. Francis. A public report of excessively strong winds 14 NW St. Francis roughly at intersection CRZ and CR5 was also reported along with an unknown amount of flipped campers, lost power and off and on instances of less than one quarter mile visibility due to dust.

Wider weather episode

A strong cold front brought high wind gusts up to 85 mph across northwest Kansas during the evening of the 17th into the early morning of the 18th. Numerous wind gusts of 58-80+ mph were observed, with the strongest being just west of Goodland topping out at 85 mph.
