Event narrative

The Ambient weather site named Section 17 located 10 NE Wallace recorded multiple instances of 81 mph wind gusts and a gust of 78 mph before the 81 mph gusts. The Kansas Mesonet site named Russell Springs 3 SW, and a weather underground site named KKSWALLA4 located 13 SSE Wallace both recorded a 64 mph wind gust. A 59 and 61 mph wind gust was also recorded at the Oakley AWOS (KOEL).

Wider weather episode

A strong cold front brought high wind gusts up to 85 mph across northwest Kansas during the evening of the 17th into the early morning of the 18th. Numerous wind gusts of 58-80+ mph were observed, with the strongest being just west of Goodland topping out at 85 mph.
