Trained spotters reported 5.8 inches in Stony Brook and 4.5 inches at 1 SW Mount Sinai. Broadcast Media reported 4.5 inches at 1 ENE Commack. NWS Employees reported 5.1 inches at 1 NE Lake Ronkonkoma, 5.2 inches at 1 WSW Poquott, and 4.6 inches at 1 SW Sunken Meadow Park. The public reported 5.2 inches at 2 S Commack, 5.0 inches at 1 SE East Northport, and 4.4 inches at 1 S Nesconset. Cocorahs reported 5.5 inches at 2.1 W Setauket-East Setauket. Overall, high end advisory criteria was reported average wise and spatially across the zone, falling just short of warning criteria.

Wider weather episode

A progressive shortwave from the west overran a cold high pressure system resulting in a significant snowfall across the region. Warm advection aloft was the main driver of the snowfall for much of the event. Advisory to Warning level snow fell across Southeastern New York.
