Event narrative
An official NWS Observation from Islip was reported at 6.6 inches. The public reported 7.1 inches at 1 W Shirley Airport, 5.5 inches at Holbrook, 6.3 inches at 1 WNW East Patchogue, and 6.1 inches at 2 NNW Islip. Trained spotters reported 5.6 inches at 1 SSE Bohemia and 5.3 inches in Deer Park. NWS Employees reported 5.1 inches at 1 ESE Patchogue and 5.1 inches in Sayville. Cocorahs reported 4.4 inches in Amityville. Overall the zone appeared to reach warning criteria spatially and with totals accumulated by midnight, some compaction occurred with most reports not reported until several hours after the accumulating snow had ended.
Wider weather episode
A progressive shortwave from the west overran a cold high pressure system resulting in a significant snowfall across the region. Warm advection aloft was the main driver of the snowfall for much of the event. Advisory to Warning level snow fell across Southeastern New York.
