Event narrative

A long-duration snowfall totaled 5.2 inches 2 miles west-northwest of Jefferson and 5.0 inches 10 miles north-northeast of Elk Point. During a brief break in snowfall during the late evening of November 28 and into the early overnight, a period of light freezing rain and freezing drizzle resulted in up to a tenth of an inch ice accumulation.

Wider weather episode

A strong moisture-laden Colorado Low moved across the Northern Plains November 28 and 29 resulting in widespread snowfall from 4 to 12 inches, with the greatest snowfall in portions of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota toward the U.S. Highway 71 corridor. Many locations found a brief break in snowfall later on November 28 when some light freezing rain and freezing drizzle occurred. Overall, area roadways were snow covered and slick resulting in hazardous travel.
