Dense Fog — La Sal & Abajo Mountains, Utah

2025-11-23 · La Sal & Abajo Mountains, Utah

Event narrative

Localized dense fog developed near the Abajo mountains throughout the night of November 23-24. The KU64 AWOS at the Monticello City Airport reported over five hours of reduced visibility due to freezing fog prior to midnight. However, 1/4-mile visibility was only briefly reached three times during this period, lasting no longer than 20 minutes each time. No reports of injuries, damages, or fatalities were received.

Wider weather episode

A shortwave trough brought rain and snowfall to the Abajo mountains and surrounding areas on November 23. Overnight, the trough moved out of the region. A weak pressure gradient made for calmer winds, and a drying mid-level atmosphere cleared skies. With the recent precipitation though, low-level moisture remained pooled over southeastern Utah leading to the development of patchy dense fog.
