Wider weather episode

During the morning of the 8th, a shortwave and upper-level jet max began to move over west Texas and southeast New Mexico while a surface cyclone strengthened over the Oklahoma Panhandle. As the jet max moved overhead, very strong to high winds developed in the higher terrain (namely the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains), as well as the surrounding foothills. Gusts up to 80-90 mph were observed in the Guadalupe Mountains and at Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
