Event narrative

Dense fog due to snow showers developed within the Central Yampa River Basin on the evening of December 27. The KHDN AWOS at the Yampa Valley Regional Airport reported reduced visibility due to fog occurring between snow showers. Dense fog occurred for about 30 minutes during this period, with visibility dropping to less than 1/4 mile for about five minutes within that span. No reports of injuries, damages, or fatalities were received.

Wider weather episode

Southwesterly flow ahead of an upper-level trough brought snow showers to much of northwestern Colorado throughout December 27. Surface conditions became saturated with the cooling evening temperatures, leading to the development of dense fog across portions of northwest Colorado.
