Wider weather episode
During the early morning hours of December 19th, a strong cold front progressed through southwestern Virginia and caused a quick burst in strong wind gusts. Downed trees and power lines in the midst of the elevated winds were first noted around one in the morning, and remained the case until winds subsided around daybreak. Nearly 5,000 homes and businesses in Buchanan and Dickenson Counties were without power due to this event. High pressure building into the western Ohio Valley allowed winds to subside quickly as the front dashed towards the eastern seaboard.
